What is moringa oil?

Moringa oil is derived from the seeds of the moringa oleifera tree native to India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The tree is also known as the drumstick tree or the "Miracle Tree" because its leaves and seeds contain more than 90 nutrients and 46 antioxidants that boost health. Moringa oil is made through a cold-pressing process that extracts the oil from seeds of the tree. To get the true benefits of moringa oil, cold pressing is essential because it will help retain nutrients that would be lost from heat extraction.

When moringa oil is properly extracted, it contains vitamin C, vitamin B, different types of monounsaturated fats that promote smooth, shiny, and healthy hair.

Cool, so now that you've learned what moringa oil is and where it comes from — let's look at the moringa benefits for hair and why we infuse it in our Ghost Collection..

What are the benefits of moringa oil for hair?

The nourishing vitamins, antioxidants, and many nutrients provide several benefits of moringa. If you want to add moringa oil into your hair routine, here are the benefits you can expect:

1. Strengthens your hair

Keratin protein is the primary component of hair, comprising 95% of each strand. As you age, keratin production declines which reduces the strength of your hair leading to dryness, breakage, thinning, and hair loss. Moringa oil is packed with zinc, which helps boost keratin production to make up for the deficiency as you get older. By using moringa oil, you can give your body more zinc which will help keep keratin production at an optimal level to promote strong, healthy hair. Additionally, the proteins in moringa oil also help to protect hair from potential damaging factors such as heat and the environment.

2. Improve shine and softness

Another benefit of moringa oil is its rich supply of fatty acids such as behenic acid that can increase the shine and softness of your hair. While nourishing strands, the fatty acids also form a protective barrier to repel moisture which can help reduce frizz and protect against other environmental hazards.

3. Add Moisture

Moringa oil is loved for its ability to deliver moisture straight to the scalp, to prevent dryness and deeply nourish hair from the source. While many oils have a tendency to stick around on the surface of your scalp, moringa oil is absorbed quickly as a result of being so light.

Rather than adding moisture to the exterior of dry or damaged hair strands, moringa oil hydrates the scalp to nourish hair from the inside out thanks to its abundance of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.

4. Mend split ends

Split ends occur from broken amino acid chains in your hair. Normally, amino acids are held together by bonds which help your hair stay strong and healthy. Howeverheat, chemical treatments, weather, and rough handling can break the bonds. As the bonds break, strands become weaker and split ends occur. While you can’t permanently repair split ends, replenishing amino acids can mend the bonds to help. Moringa oil is packed with amino acids that can help to mend broken bonds in weak or damaged strands. It helps repair damaged strands while promoting the health of new hair.

5. Promotes hair growth

Moringa oil has built a strong reputation for promoting natural hair growth due to the high content of key nutrients such as vitamins A/B/E and zinc.  Zinc promoted keratin production makes up 95% of every hair on your head. Although you can boost your keratin production by consuming certain foods such as sweet potatoes, spinach, and eggs — the amount obtained from foods won’t be sufficient to promote hair growth. Instead, you should use products that contain nutrient combinations designed to boost keratin production and promote healthy hair — such as our Ghost Collection

So if you accidentally cut off one too many inches of your hair (it happens to the best of us), incorporate moringa (which contains keratin boosting nutrients) packed Ghost products into your routine to speed up the hair growth process and restore your luscious locks!

6. Moringa oil helps hair retain its color

Many hair oils have a slight tint to them which can affect the color of your hair whether it’s natural or dyed, but moringa seeds create a clear oil so this issue doesn’t occur.  In fact, the vitamins C and E found in moringa oil fight free radicals that cause hair to weaken and turn gray. Furthermore, the added moisture you receive from moringa oil helps to protect against dryness and UV rays which can deplete hair color. So whether you’ve dyed your hair and don’t want the color to be altered or you’re all-natural and want to prevent hair from greying, moringa is the way to go when choosing a hair oil. If you have blonde, grey, or silver hair and want to keep color from fading, consider using our hydrating and color-enhancing Purple Mask to help keep your hair light and bright.
