Mother knows best!

Posted by Allan Weizmann on

Mom, momma, mommy, mama - anyway you call her, our mothers always know what's right. Whether we like to admit this cliché or not, mom knows best. We hear it in songs, movies, books and tbh they're not wrong! Moms have years of wisdom plus carrying and raising kids that qualify them as great advice givers, including but not limited to hairstyling.

As Mother's Day approaches we started thinking, what are some of those classic mom hair advice? Were they any good? Times have changed and although some hair tips and hacks have been debunked, some still stand the test of time!

Here are some of the advice the Verb Girls moms gave us back in the days:

  • My grandmother told my mom that eating jell-o makes your hair grow faster because of the protein that is in jell-o. Ew.
  • Also, my mom would always tell me to use coconut oil as a hair mask! I’d evenly distribute it throughout my hair from roots to ends, tie it in a bun and leave it in overnight. I’d wash it out the next morning and my hair and scalp would be left moisturized and shiny.

  • My grandma used to want me to grow my hair long because long hair was very ingrained and desired in Chinese society. She usually "washes" her rice twice and would put aside the water for me to soak my hair in because it supposedly strengthened my hair!
    • Not sure if it really worked but I guess something useful for "waste water" 😃
  • Also can't wash your hair on new years day, make sure you wash it on Chinese new years eve! Chinese symbol for hair 发 is also the first word in the term "get lucky or wealthy: ( 发财 ). If you wash your hair on new years' day, you are washing away your fortune for the whole year to come!!!

  • My mom used to tell me to spray chamomile tea in my hair during the summer so I can get “natural” highlights haha

  • My mom never gave me any beauty advice or tips, honestly not sure how I learned before the era of youtube, I guess my older sisters taught me everything about makeup/hair (hence my blue eyeliner phase in 8th grade) anyways about hair, since my mom didn't do my hair my dad would actually style it the days I had something his go-to was the flip through ponytail (not sure what this style is called) and he would literally use a vacuum cleaner to pull my hair up into a perfect ponytail lol

  • put lemon juice in your hair when you tan for highlights

  • Every week (usually on Sundays) my mom would blow dry her hair and wrap it around her head with what is called "duckbill clips", and go to sleep like this to make her hair straight the next day. This "technique" is called "Dubi" and she would do it to me when I was young for "special events"😂. I think this was before flat irons were popular.
  • My mom would do homemade avocado-mayonnaise hair masks to smooth and soften the hair.

  • My mom told me to put mayonnaise in my hair like a hair mask to make it soft and shiny...and it worked tbh!
  • The classic advice I heard from my mom, grandma, and any other women was to use baby powder (basically as dry shampoo) to soak up the excess oil in the top of your hair. I try it when I'm out of dry shampoo.

  • My grandma would tell me that putting olive oil in my hair would make it shiny and strong LOL. Nothing bad ever happened to me. I would also squeeze lemon in my hair to make it "lighter".

  • One thing I can think of from my grandma-she always told us to use coconut oil to wash our hair since I was born in an island near southern China coast resources are very limited, we don’t have the luxury to wash our hair every day but we do have plenty of coconut oil around on the island and that is where the whole coconut hair story coming from.

  • I think it is crazy how we when my mom was in high school showing a bobby pin in your hair was considered to be very inappropriate. She would always say it was like having your bra straps showing. When I was in high school, I would go through a pack of bobby pins a day. I also can't quite understand how someone can sleep with orange juice cans in their hair.... but she claims to have done that too!!

  • My mom always told me not to wear a ponytail to bed so that I don’t pull my hairline back.
    • My mom used to tell me that if I ate more salmon, my hair would grow faster and thicker. Maybe that’s why I love salmon so much...

Diana • Sales

  • I used to iron my hair with a real iron -- that got it straight
    • I learned that from someone
  • my mom French braided my hair to death every day
  • ive hear beer makes your hair shiny -- someone once told me to do that - and olive oil.

  • If you always use the same shampoo, eventually it will stop working.

  • Making a mix of coconut oil and honey for 10 minutes once a week is a very good way to keep your hair glossy!

  • The piece of advice my mom gave me was to love my curls and be proud of them (which I ended up loving).

  • My mom would treat my sister and me to fun girls days at her salon to get our hair cut and blown out so we were feeling all cute. Afterwards, we would usually have lunch and end up at the mall. These were always really fun, special days. I also know my mom hated when I would dye my hair crazy colors (or when I got terrible, thick, brassy highlights), but always let me do it anyway. Thanks, Ma.
